While being extremely versatile, NMR is struggling with the lack of sensitivity compared to other analytical techniques. One method to improve this is by cryogenically cooling the RF components of the NMR probe, leading to a significant boost in signal-to-noise ratio while keeping the sample in its original composition. Moreover, the sample temperature is controlled independently, assuring optimal experimental conditions. While this technology has revolutionized liquid state NMR and MRI, so far there have been only a few attempts to apply it to solid-state NMR and in particular to magic angle spinning NMR. In this presentation the technical challenges, solutions and the major advantages of cryogenically cooled MAS NMR probes will be shown. In addition, results from experiments on different samples and comparisons with conventional MAS probes will be presented.
